PS 56 emphasized the education of the whole child, with a specific emphasis on creating engaging and creative arts experiences. Our school promotes experiences in a variety of genres, such as dance, visual arts, music and theater. We have been able this year to initiate partnerships with organizations, such as Little Orchestra Society, Bronx Arts Ensemble, Dancing Classrooms, and Studio in a School to ensure that all of our students experience dance, visual arts, music instruction, and performance throughout the year. Additionally, our full time dance instructor has introduced our students to a variety of genres, such as modern dance, traditional dance, tap, and others. Not only do our students experience these themselves, but often through these partnerships they are able to see professional artists and musicians perform at such institutions as the Metropolitan Museum, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Brooklyn Museum, and Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College. We strongly feel that these experiences enhance the students educational experience overall and improves their progress not only in arts classes but other academic areas as well.
