Students at Maxwell CTE High School are given their two terms of required arts credits, ideally in the ninth grade. The art curriculum strives to incorporate interdisciplinary themes, art history and a wide range of studio materials and techniques. Higher level arts-based classes are offered in specialized areas such as fashion illustration, textile design, color theory, typography, photography, web design, mixed media and desktop publishing. Both studio and computer based graphic design courses are taken in sequential order. Currently, students can also fulfill the arts credit by taking music. We offer guitar, chorus, music appreciation, instrumental techniques, and keyboard/piano. We have an established keyboard lab. Students have the chance to work collaboratively with their peers in the music room for performance ensembles. It is our hope that in the near future, students will elect to pursue careers in the arts. The art/music teachers attempt to tap into the students' creativity to strengthen their problem solving skills. Maxwell has participated in the annual SING competition for the past two years. Students have the opportunity to dance, sing, write, set design, be in the chorus, act, stage/lighting/sound crew. The annual SING competition has become a highlight of the school year where students can showcase their talents.
