The Arts Program at PS/IS 206 includes two certified visual arts teachers, two certified music teachers, one certified drama teacher and one certified dance teacher. In the 2017-18 school year, PS/IS 206 will be adding an additional visual arts teacher to the Arts department. The elementary music program at P.S. 206 is a sequenced program that addresses musical feeling, concepts, music literacy, cultural context, and performance. The middle school program includes General Music building a foundation of music which includes: the instruments of the orchestra, traditional notation, tablature, Western and World Music History, musical theater and the Little Kids Rock Modern Band Program. Performances are done throughout the school year. The Dance program at P.S./I.S. 206 is a creative based program focused on the Elements of Dance and techniques such as Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Hip-Hop, and cultural dance forms. Through the Blueprint for the Arts in Dance, we study various choreographers, and the history of each dance form. Students are creative choreographers through the art of dance-making including a partnership with Alvin Ailey. The PS 206 theatre program is designed to introduce students to theatre as an art for and means of communication, engage their creativity in developing original performance material, and build their skills as theatre artists and lifelong learners. The Visual Arts Program at is aligned with the NYC Blueprint for Arts and students explore drawing, painting, sculpture paper-mache, printmaking, and collage.
