Schooling in the arts is an important part of a Stuyvesant student's well rounded education. Our music curriculum emphasizes performances with nearly 30% of our students participating in music ensembles. There are 3 concert bands, a beginning band, a jazz band, 3-string orchestras and 2 choruses. Those students who do not participate in a performance ensemble are required to take Music Appreciation.
In addition to the 3 public concerts the music department presents annually, there are 3 theatre productions (including a fall "musical" and spring play) and the annual "Sing" production. For the past several years members of our orchestra, through a highly competitive selection process, have performed for the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society Young Ensembles program. Other students have won positions in the Inter-Borough Orchestra (ISO), All City bands & orchestra, and the All State bands, orchestras, & chorus. The choruses recently performed for the Invitational High School Choral Festival at Hunter College, sponsored by the National Chorale of New York City, and the Distinguished Concerts International New York at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.
Our fine arts program consists of art appreciation, water color, acrylic painting, Advanced Placement in Art History, and Studio Mixed Art. Our technology education department offers courses in computer graphics, photography, video production, web design, drafting, advanced auto CAD, ceramics, interior design, & architecture.
