In the DSNY Monthly Tonnage Data dataset on the OpenData portal, DSNY already provides monthly tonnage data from 1990 to the present for the following materials that represent the majority of what DSNY collects in its fleet of trucks that service NYC: refuse, paper, metal/glass/plastic, organics, school organics, leaves, and Christmas trees. The request for additional historical data included a total of 98 different material codes which included items that represent a small fraction of what DSNY manages. What’s more, the data had to be manually compiled because it resulted in well over 1.5 million records that would break or severely strain our automated systems. The request for this historical data was made for research purposes by a person who is familiar with DSNY material codes. The current system of reporting tonnage data is manageable to DSNY and presents straightforward information to the public.
