This is a dynamic institution that provides high-quality programs that emphasize civil rights issues. Students develop skills in lyrical composition, writing, musical recording, and producing. Students perform at school functions and talent shows. Students travel to courthouses in New York and Washington DC, compete in Moot Court competitions, and serve as judges, attorneys, jurors, bailiffs, and clerks in the AcademyÂ’s Youth Court. A courtroom is also available for mock trials and law-related classes. Whether your plans are to enroll in a four-year university or enroll in a law enforcement or legal training program, the High School for Civil Rights provides students with the academic background and workplace exposure needed for success.

The Brooklyn STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Center provides a CTE focus on a range of courses in four industry areas: information technology, graphics, engineering, and architecture. The program includes innovative technical training leading to certification and opportunities to earn college credit and will also offer opportunities to complete work-based learning sequences (e.g. internships) to provide pathways to employment and/or post-secondary credentials.

The Smart Scholars Early College Program is comprised of a rigorous curriculum which endeavors to prepare students for college level courses. During their tenure, scholars will fulfill the New York State high school requirements while obtaining 20 transferable college credits.

Provides students with computer literacy, maintenance skills, knowledge of programming languages, and the cognitive skills to solve problems through programming. Four-year program includes courses in literacy, programming, maintenance, and repair.

This program distinguishes itself with recognition in Mock Trial and Moot Court competitions. A small learning community which offers law-related courses including: You and The Law, Constitutional & Business Law, Mock Trial, Debate Team and Bioethics.

Students are programmed for honors courses and will take courses in Math Research or Robotic Engineering. Students will prepare for a variety of high level regional and national competitions.

Students in our Automotive Service Center Specialist program are required to complete 1000 hours of work in the areas of engine performance, electronics, brakes, and transmissions. Students must successfully complete industry-based assessments and the required hours to be eligible for Work Based Learning and internships. Successful completion of the program results in CTE Certification and ASE/NATEF entry level certifications.

Students in our Business Technology program are required to take courses in accounting, marketing, business writing, and virtual enterprise. Incoming students will be eligible for internships and will participate in local and state competitions.

Comprehensive pre-engineering program with emphasis on manufacturing, design & robotics; rigorous curriculum includes computer-aided design, using Project Lead The Way (PLTW) curriculum & hands-on application culminating in prototype development.

Students in our Mechanical Engineering program complete a minimum of four math courses and a three-year engineering sequence by the time they graduate. Students will learn how to use technology such as AutoCAD to take their ideas from concept stage to the production stage. Extracurricular opportunities such as Robotics and SkillsUSA will afford students the opportunity to continue to develop their skills.

Students in our Law Enforcement Academy will complete a series of courses ranging from the History of Crime through computer forensics. Students will participate in Moot Court, a variety of inter-state trips, and will be eligible for internships and Work Based Learning opportunities.

Program includes study of structures, space, color, form, with a focus on hand drafting, architectural design, model making and sketching, and AutoCAD. Seniors complete city planning design project to address current zoning issues, visit museums and professional studios and hear from visiting professionals. Student projects are critiqued and reviewed by industry partners in order to provide students with specific, relevant industry feedback.

9th grade: Design Foundations; 10th grade: select CTE major from Cartooning, Animation, Fashion/Costume Design, Illustration, Graphic Design, Digital Photography; gain introduction to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Technical assessment required for CTE certification. Upper grade students can apply for AP courses in Illustration and Graphic Design. All portfolios are evaluated by professionals. Studio-based curriculum includes pre-production, production and post-production skills. Through hands-on filmmaking, students learn film theory, film analysis, scriptwriting and editing in Final Cut-Pro and gain industry-based technical and theoretical knowledge. Portfolio with 8-12 pieces of original artwork created from observation and studentsÂ’ own imagination with a diversity of subject matter and use of media. Please include examples of line drawings as well as value studies of geometric shapes and forms. You should also include a drawing of your neighborhood and a plan of your bedroom or your apartment. Three-dimensional pieces can be photographed. You will be required to draw from observation and memory.

Prepare a portfolio of 8-15 pieces of original work. Include examples of observational drawings. Complete up to three drawing assignments at the audition. Check schoolÂ’s website for examples. They may include: the human figure, and drawing from observation or imagination.

Portfolio including two storyboards (each a minimum of ten frames each) depicting a scene from imagination and a 250-word essay describing your interest in filmmaking. At the audition, students will be given a visual representation and will be asked to develop a story that could be used as the basis for a film. Be prepared to address these questions: What is the story about? Who are the main characters? What are the conflicts? What type of film? How does it end? Materials are supplied at audition.

Acting: Students engage in portraying complex characters, scene work, monologues, and improvisation. Dance: Gain introduction to the language of dance, develop improvisational skills and basic choreographic devices, and learn the history and technique of major dance forms. Both of these studies culminate in performances that prepare students for college auditions and contribute to their portfolios.

At HERO High, students learn how to save lives and serve their communities by preparing for a career as a registered nurse or community health worker. Students take college classes starting in tenth grade and can earn a two-year Associates Degree with help from a small school environment. Our academic program will prepare every student to succeed in college and their career through hands-on, real-world problem solving, advanced work in math and science, and challenging reading and writing tasks in every class. Students explore the numerous career pathways available in the health professions. With rigorous courses and unique learning opportunities, students acquire background knowledge to continue their studies in health careers after high school. Some potential careers include medical technologists and assistants, nursing, patient care, medical billing, and veterinary studies.

This program is for students who have been in the country for less than three years and are English Language Learners. The curriculum is designed to develop the studentsÂ’ conversational language and writing skills using ESL strategies. After completing one full year of ELA instruction in the NewcomersÂ’-Global Community, students will transition into one of our theme-based SLCs.

Students are challenged to excel academically and encouraged to develop leadership qualities and take advantage of many internship programs, summer programs, and partnership opportunities. Students take honors-level core subjects that emphasize Math and Science as well as AP and college courses. A strong academic foundation coupled with enrichment opportunities help to develop a well-rounded student who is prepared for higher education: a productive citizen able to continue our schoolÂ’s legacy.

Students develop 21st century skills as they deepen their exploration in fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Specifically, students will learn coding, computer programming, mechanical design, and how they relate to areas such as robotics. In addition, students will learn about environmental engineering with a focus in agriculture and sustainability.

Students learn about the arts through hands-on experience, written work, and art creation. Field trips take advantage of the rich cultural environment of New York City. Students visit art galleries and museums and attend dramatic productions both on and off Broadway. Students also learn the business end of promoting music, drama, creative writing, and visual arts through direct involvement in hands-on projects taking place at concerts, art galleries, poetry slams, and play productions.
