Modeled after the prestigious Boston Latin school and founded in 2006, The Brooklyn Latin School provides a liberal arts curriculum with an emphasis on the Classics and Latin language instruction. Early instruction emphasizes the acquisition of core knowledge of the key academic disciplines which students use as a foundation for deeper exploration in the upper grades. Widely regarded around the world as the most rigorous and comprehensive course of study at the high school level, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme is integral to our curriculum. Advanced Placement Environmental Science class takes place in our newly constructed NY Sunworks sponsored hydroponics lab (or green classroom).

We seek to empower students through rigorous instruction to become self-reliant/resilient, responsible leaders, caretakers of the Earth and others.

Students gain hands-on experience by preparing soil, composting, producing seedlings in our green classroom and studying food justice systems.

When students actively build on each other's ideas, ask questions and discuss, they intellectually engage in the work and their performance improves.

We will achieve this by incorporating the citywide instructional expectations and preparing rigorous lessons with the Common Core Standards in mind.

Students must present a portfolio of 10-20 pieces of original work including still life, human figure and imaginative drawing. Students must be able to discuss their portfolio, artistic interests and area of study. Students must take an in-person drawing test.

Students must perform a song (classical, popular, or gospel) a cappella. Rhythm and tonal memory, improvisational skills, intonation, accuracy of pitch, breath support and diction will be tested.

Students will take part in an abbreviated dance class, in which they will do barre work, exercises center floor, practice movement across the floor and learn a short combination. Students must also have a 2 minute dance solo prepared, reflective of modern, jazz, ballet, or ethnic dance techniques. Leotard and tights for girls and white shirt black sweat pants for boys are required. Students must have their music on a CD or iPod.

Students must perform a memorized monologue and an impromptu reading. Attire that allows free movement is required.

Students must perform a prepared selection and two major scales. Sight reading, rhythm and tonal memory will be tested.

UNHS offers challenging curricula with individualized support, empowering students to prosper in higher education and the work force. Our students can earn up to 30 tuition-free college credits before graduating high school through Advanced Placement (AP) courses and CUNY College Now classes. In our NAF Academy of Hospitality and Tourism, students develop college and workplace skills, explore various careers through internships, and graduate with a CTE-endorsed diploma.
