The Douglass STEM Institute prepares scholars for success in colleges and careers focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through a performance-task-based curriculum. We are a college preparatory high school. Course offerings and high standards enable students to succeed after graduation at the nation's most selective colleges. Our teachers provide each student with personalized attention and guidance. We provide four years of science and math with extensive liberal arts. Every freshman will take a year-long writing intensive small class-size English course to prepare them for college. Most students take Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Many of our students take college courses though Columbia University DDC and CUNY College Now program. Our students participate in scientific research with university mentors, some resulting in publication. A new SAT/ACT initiative helps students' competitive standings.

Grade 11 students take a mandated SAT prep program designed and taught by MCSM teachers. This program has significantly raised average SAT scores.

We have begun to offer College Now on site, as a CCNY a professor teaches Psychology at MCSM. Many students attend College Now at CUNY campuses.

The Urban Assembly School for the Performing Arts (UASPA) is a college-preparatory, performing arts high school. At UASPA, we believe that all students deserve access to a rigorous academic and artistic high school experience; therefore, we do not screen or audition our students. We have partnerships with organizations, such as Tony Bennett Foundation/Exploring the Arts, Martha Graham Dance Company, and EPIC Theatre Ensemble, that support our teachers with improving arts-infused instruction and provide students with exceptional art and career based learning experiences. In partnership with Rosie's Theater Kids students receive pre-conservatory training in vocal music, dance, and acting. All first and second year students participate in an annual musical theater concert. All third and fourth year students perform in an end-of-year main-stage musical production. In partnership with the professional theater company Waterwell, and built around the core values: engagement and empathy. Students take daily conservatory-style class in acting, movement/devising, voice & speech and theater studies. Each applicant will be required to act, sing and dance at this audition. Please prepare the following: Acting: Present a one-minute memorized monologue (comedic or dramatic) from a published play. Singing: Present 32 bars of a memorized Broadway song (age-appropriate) - an accompanist will be provided, so bring sheet music in the appropriate key. Dancing: Be prepared to learn a short theater dance combination - please wear clothing that allows for freedom of movement, as well as jazz shoes or sneakers.

Prepare two contrasting monologues (one minute each), for example: dramatic/comedic, classical/contemporary, published/original, or theater/film. Choose characters close to your age or life experience, decide who your characters are talking to and why, and completely memorize both pieces.

Present a memorized classical music selection. The song must demonstrate vocal skills and ability. Classical selections can be found in either 'Twenty-Four Italian Songs and Arias' or 'The Art Song Anthology.' Do not present rock, pop, gospel, country, musical theater, Disney or contemporary music. You must bring sheet music for your song to the audition; an accompanist will be provided. Vocal musicianship (the ability to sing scales, sing a cappella, etc.) will be tested at the audition.

Participate in an Ailey School master class that includes ballet, modern, and jazz techniques. Applicants must wear ballet shoes and fitted black dance attire. No prepared solo is necessary.

All students study programming languages including HTML and JavaScript, mobile application development, and website hosting. During the senior year, students prepare for the AP Computer Science Principles exam. Industry professionals, in collaboration with Script ED, work with students to develop their skills and prepare them for worksite trips and internships. Students are expected to participate in work-based learning activities including job shadowing and internships.

Students learn all aspects of the culinary industry, including various food preparation techniques, safety, and sanitation. All students must take the NYC Department of Health Food Handler's course/exam and the NOCTI performance and written assessment. Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP) partners with our school and provides various career and scholarship opportunities. Students are expected to participate in work-based learning activities including job shadowing and internships.

Students learn of the electrical industry, including residential and commercial wiring, motor controls and sustainable technology such as solar. All students must earn certification by NCCER upon graduation. They are also required to take a ten-hour certification exam by OSHA. We partner with MTA, the Building Trades Council (Local 3), and TWU Local 100. Students are expected to participate in work-based learning activities including job shadowing and internships.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) provides a CTE focus on a range of courses including: culinary, information technology, graphics, engineering, and architecture. The program includes innovative technical training leading to certification and opportunities to earn college credit. Students are expected to participate in our ninth grade summer program as well as Saturday classes for program acceleration

Students learn all aspects of computer repair and maintenance, network design, and infrastructure support. Global Informatics prepares students to use information technology to design and work with highly effective systems in the global marketplace. Real world experiences are incorporated in a rigorous computer-based program of instruction in AP Science and CTE Information Technology courses. Career opportunities: bioinformatics, data mapping, database designing, digital art, web design, software engineer, and many more new and soon to be created careers in information technology.

Our award-winning Culinary Arts Program offers a four-year sequence in culinary training. Students learn food preparation and production skills in a full-service commercial kitchen. The coursework culminates in an exam which qualifies students for a Career and Technical Education (CTE) diploma endorsement.

In partnership with the National Academy Foundation, students are prepared to enter the workplace as event planners, applying skills acquired to work in supervisory and managerial positions in hotels and restaurants. Students will have job shadowing, internship and paid work opportunities. Students will take the NOCTI examination and qualify for a CTE (Career & Technical Education) diploma endorsement.

Students in this program complete sequenced coursework, with a focus on sports medicine and health professions. Rigorous instruction in Regents and AP Science courses is at the core of our program. Utilizing our extensive physical education and health clinic facility, including our Olympic-size pool and athletic field, students will have the opportunity to prepare for certification as personal trainers, first aid, and CPR.

Students explore ethical, moral, cultural, and legal factors affecting societies past and present. Through frequent field trips to major cultural institutions of New York City, this program prepares well-rounded individuals who have skills to serve their community. Students in this program join AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, a national college readiness program that teaches students critical thinking and organizational skills.

Students interested in being a part of Broadway Productions are provided with an opportunity to earn Chancellor's Endorsed Diploma in the Arts. Students will also write, direct, and perform in musicals and plays. Open to all who want to perform, learn an instrument, sing, create sets, and learn to run productions.

Students develop skills for careers in international business fields. Along with the core curriculum, students will research and investigate other countries and cultures to be a force in the global society and economy. The goal of the program is to nurture and promote bilingual and bicultural citizenship.

Our Dual Language program is designed to integrate English language proficiency with Spanish language proficiency. Students receive content instruction in English and Spanish. The goal of the program is for all its students to qualify for the NYSED Seal of Bi-Literacy diploma endorsement.
