Hazard Mitigation Plan - Mitigation Actions Database

New York City’s comprehensive effort to reduce or eliminate potential losses from the hazards described in the Hazard Specific section of the website. The map includes existing and completed mitigation actions that will minimize the effects of a hazard event on New York City’s population, economy, property, building stock, and infrastructure. It is the result of a coordinated effort by 46 New York City agencies and partners to develop and implement a broad range of inventive and effective ways to mitigate hazards.

NOTE: This table can be joined to the mapped projects using the HMP Index field.

Mitigation Actions Description
The Seaport Coastal Resilience Project will protect the South Street Seaport Historic District in Lower Manhattan by mitigating impacts from multiple hazards, addressing coastal flooding, sea level rise, extreme precipitation, and urban heat island effect. Coastal flooding risk will be mitigated by raising the shoreline edge with a new bulkhead and concrete capped knee-wall; a compartmentalized and independent flood mitigation solution will be created by running tie-ins inland. Extreme precipitation will be mitigation by creating a new outfall in the area, along with associated conveyance infrastructure. The new outfall will include a tide gate to prevent backflow. Stormwater will also be mitigated through nature-based solutions via innovative green infrastructure. Urban heat island effect will be mitigated by the construction of green infrastructure elements to replace existing concrete an stone
