Measles

Information on measles and measles vaccination

<p>Measles is still common in many parts of the world, including countries in Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and Africa. The United States has also seen a high number of measles cases. The majority of people who get measles are unvaccinated.</p> <p>Measles is highly contagious, causing high fever and rash all over the body. Infection can be serious and more severe in young infants, pregnant women who are not immune to measles, and persons with a weak immune system. </p> <p>Complications may include:</p> <p>• Ear infection <br />• Diarrhea <br />• Pneumonia <br />• Brain inflammation <br />• Death</p> <p>Measles vaccine is very effective and safe, with the benefits far outweighing any risks. Children should receive their first dose of MMR vaccine routinely at 12 months of age and their second dose between ages 4 and 6 years. </p> <p>Adults without documentation of either prior measles vaccination or an immunity to measles should contact their healthcare provider to ask about a blood test to see if they are immune or for vaccination information. There is no harm in receiving additional doses of MMR vaccine. </p> <p>You should contact your healthcare provider to check your vaccination status before international travel.</p> <p>Health care providers can order posters and other related material.</p>

New Sidewalk Installation

Get information about installing a sidewalk in a place where a sidewalk has never been built.

The City requires property owners to build and maintain sidewalks adjacent to their properties. This rule is stated in section 19-152 of the New York City Administrative Code.<br><br>The City does not take requests for new installation or repairs that are the property owner's responsibility. Animal Abuse Registry

City residents convicted of an animal abuse crime must register with the NYC Animal Abuse Registry.

The 2014 Animal Abuse Registration Act requires anyone living in New York City who is convicted of an animal abuse crime after October 2, 2014, and who is at least 18 years old at the time of conviction, to contact the City Health Department to be added to the NYC Animal Abuse Registry. This law also requires certain animal-related businesses and organizations to check the NYC Animal Abuse Registry and refuse to sell or transfer ownership of an animal to anyone listed in the Registry.<br /><br />If you are required to register, you must contact the Health Department within 5 days of being released from incarceration, or within 5 days of sentencing if you were not incarcerated.<br /><br />The registration period lasts for 5 years after sentencing or, if you were incarcerated, for 5 years after release from incarceration. <br /><br />Failure to register as required may be punishable by up to a year in jail, a fine up to $1,000, or both.<br /> <div data-mce-bogus='1' class='mcePaste' id='_mcePaste' style='position: absolute; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow: hidden; top: -25px; left: -40px;'></div>
