Flood Insurance Policy Changes

Get information on flood insurance policy rate changes.

<p>New flood insurance policy rates will take effect April 1, 2015. Primary residences will see a renewal increase of 18% of the current premium. If your home was substantially damaged in Superstorms Sandy or Irene, the policy renewal could increase by up to 25%. Second residences and businesses will see a policy renewal increase of up to 25%.</p> <p>Residential and business owners will also pay a new surcharge called the 'Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act of 2014 (HFIAA).' The surcharge for primary residences is $25 and secondary residences and businesses will be charged $250. You will automatically be billed $250, the HFIAA second-home rate. If your residence is your primary home, your insurance agent will send you a notice to submit proof to verify your primary residence. You must submit verification of primary residence to your insurance agent within 30 days from the date of the notice. If you do not submit verification in this timeframe, you will have to pay the $250 rate.</p> <p>To receive the $25 HFIAA surcharge rate, you must submit ONE of the following proofs of primary residence:</p> <ul> <li>Driver's license</li> <li>Automobile registration</li> <li>Proof of insurance for a vehicle</li> <li>Voter registration</li> <li>Documents showing where your children attend school</li> <li>Homestead Tax Credit Form for Primary Residence</li> </ul> <p>You can get more information and connect to housing counseling and legal services online or by calling (646)-786-0888.</p>

Pesticide Use Without Notification Complaint

The City accepts reports of people or businesses that do not give advance notice about pesticide application.<br><br>The City accepts reports of home or property owners with a lawn, or other kind of green space covering an area larger than 100 square feet who do not post warning signs when using pesticides or pesticide-containing fertilizers outdoors. <br><br>The City also accepts reports of commercial lawn pesticide applicators who do not give written notice to occupants of neighboring properties 48 hours before applying lawn care pesticides. Reports are also accepted of residential or non-residential building owners who do not give written notice to occupants within 24 hours of a scheduled pesticide application.

Bluebelt Program

The City maintains the Staten Island Bluebelt for storm water management instead of storm sewers.<br><br>The Bluebelt Program offers local people, community groups, and companies an opportunity to enhance Staten Island's open spaces by acting as sponsors who adopt parts of the Bluebelt. Under the program, sponsors can hire private companies to maintain Bluebelt sites. Each sponsor is acknowledged with a sign displaying their name at the adopted site. <br><br>The City also sponsors six Friends of the Bluebelt cleanup events each year and provides opportunities for groups to organize their own events.

Sodium Warning Rules for Chain Food Service Establishments

Chain food service establishments must post warnings about sodium content.

<p>As of December 1, 2015, the City requires chain food service establishments and mobile food vendors with 15 or more locations nationwide to post a sodium warning icon next to menu items that contain 2,300 milligrams of sodium or more. They must also post a sodium warning statement everywhere customers place their orders.</p> <p>The icon must be shown on all menu boards and menus, on food items displayed for sale with a food item tag, and on menu boards at or before a drive-through window. </p> <p>The City began issuing notices of violations for non-compliance of this rule on June 6, 2016.</p>
