Booting Company Complaint

You can make a complaint about booting companies that place wheel locks on cars.<br><br>Wheel locks, also known as boots, are used to enforce parking rules for private parking lots or streets by preventing illegally parked vehicles from being moved until a charge is paid. All booting companies must be licensed.<br><br>Booting companies may not charge more than $25 to remove the wheel lock from a car that was booted on a private parking lot. If a booted car is towed from a private parking lot, the car owner cannot be charged extra for the towing. <br><br>There is no maximum rate for booting on a private street, but those fees must be on file with the City and posted on signs at all access points leading to the public street.<br><br>Once the charge for removing the wheel lock is paid, the person who booted the car must remove the lock within 30 minutes of receiving a request to release the car.

You may request marriage legalization at any City Clerk borough office if you and your partner are over age 18 and have been issued a Marriage License.</p> <p>A Certificate of Non-Impediment is issued upon request to be used as proof of unmarried status when getting married in a foreign country.</p> <p>Inmates in the custody of the Department of Correction who want to get married must go to the Counseling Unit in their facility. The inmate's name is placed on a list by the counselor. The City Clerk's office comes to each facility periodically and meets with the individuals on the list. Inmates fill out their half of the marriage license at that time and receive further instructions from the Counseling Unit.</p>

Illegal Dumping Complaint

Report the dumping of large amounts of trash.

<p>Illegal dumping is when material (bags, construction debris, appliances, etc.) is dumped from a vehicle onto public or private property. You can report chronic illegal dumping.</p> <p>The Department of Sanitation will monitor the location and try to catch the person in action but will not remove the garbage. If you are a property owner or manager, you are responsible for the removal of garbage from public sidewalks next to your property, even if it was dumped and you filed a report. You may get a ticket for garbage you should have cleared but did not.</p> <p>Sanitation may help with the removal of unusually large items dumped in the street or sidewalk but does not remove items from private property, including community driveways and parking lots.</p> <p>Through the Illegal Dumping Reward Program, you may be eligible to receive half of the fine collected for an illegal dumping crime. You must witness illegal dumping and fill out an affidavit that leads to a conviction.</p>

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Get information about the requirement to install carbon monoxide detectors.

<p>The City requires the installation of carbon monoxide detectors (alarms) in all new and existing one- and two-family homes, apartment buildings, and hotels. Carbon monoxide detectors are also required in dormitories, nursing homes, and schools. The carbon monoxide detectors must be installed within 15 feet of the primary entrance to each sleeping room. This applies to all multiple dwellings and one-family and two-family homes.<br /><br />The City may not issue a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy or a final Certificate of Occupancy unless carbon monoxide detectors are installed in accordance with the law.<br /><br />Carbon monoxide detectors are required to be replaced as their useful life expires, according to the manufacturer's instructions and based on the original date of installation. The replacement device must be a model that has an end-of-life alarm.</p> <p>While owners are required to install and replace carbon monoxide detectors, tenants are responsible for maintaining them and changing the batteries. Tenants must pay the owner $25 when the owner installs a new carbon monoxide detector, replaces a carbon monoxide detector that has reached the end of its useful life, or replaces one that the tenant lost or damaged. Tenants have up to 1 year to make the payment.</p>

Letter Carrier Alert Program

The City's Letter Carrier Alert Program is a voluntary preventive program that allows letter carriers to notify the Department for the Aging when a senior or disabled person's mail has accumulated. Accumulated mail may indicate that the resident needs assistance. Seniors ages 60 and older and the disabled are eligible to enroll.<br /><br /> After you enroll, your letter carrier puts a sticker on your mailbox. If your letter carrier reports accumulated mail in your mailbox, someone will follow up with you to see if you need help.<br /><br /> To enroll in the program, you must have one of the following types of mailboxes:<br /><br /><ul class='dashes'><li>A mailbox in a building, which is opened by a carrier</li><li>A mailbox on the street in a cluster box</li><li>A mailbox outside the house, hanging on the front of the house</li><li>A mailbox on top of a post which is in the ground in front of the house</li></ul><br /> Mail slots in a door are not considered mailboxes.
