National Disaster Resilience Competition

Trees and Sidewalks Repair Program

Get information about a program to repair qualifying sidewalks severely damaged by curbside tree roots in front of one, two, and three family homes.

Through the Trees and Sidewalks Repair Program, the City performs free repairs for qualifying broken sidewalks severely damaged by curbside tree roots in front of one, two, and three family homes only. An official inspection of the broken sidewalk will determine if it qualifies for free repair and will rank the tree based on the level of activity on the street, the amount of sidewalk damage, and the tree's overall health. The program will repair the sidewalks with the highest priority first.<br /><br />Owners of commercial properties, co-ops, condos or residential properties with four or more units do not qualify for the Trees and Sidewalks Repair Program but can request a sidewalk tree consultation with the City. The inspector will give you advice about how to repair the sidewalk without damaging the tree.<br /><br />The City no longer permits root slicing or root pruning of City trees. Anyone with a sidewalk damaged by a City tree must request a sidewalk tree consultation. <div data-mce-bogus='1' class='mcePaste' id='_mcePaste' style='position: absolute; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow: hidden; top: -25px; left: -40px;'></div>

Water Service Shut-Off for Residential or Commercial Property

Request to turn off water service at a residential or commercial property.

<p>If you are a property owner and need to have your water service shut off, you have to contact a licensed plumber. The plumber will dig in the street to break the property's water service line connection to the DEP water main. Water charges will stop when the connection to the water main is broken.</p> <p>The City does not provide a water shut-off service.</p> <p>If you want to shut your water off temporarily, you can close the house control valve to stop water from flowing while you repair leaks or do renovations. Your property will continue to be charged for being connected to DEP water mains, but you may be billed at the current minimum billing rate.</p>

Tallman Island Wastewater Treatment Plant

The City is performing an upgrade to the Tallman Island Wastewater Treatment Plant. The plant is one of 14 in New York City that treat wastewater before it is released into the surrounding waterways. Several changes to the public waterfront will occur because of this upgrade.<br><br>The dock next to Tallman Island will not be reopened for public access. The dock will be used instead to transport shipments of sludge produced at the Tallman plant to an off-site facility for processing. This is necessary in order to prevent nitrogen discharge into the water. <br><br>The City is erecting a construction fence at Powell's Cove Boulevard from 127th Street westward, toward the boatyard at 126th Street. This fence will be up temporarily as the City installs new equipment within the plant's grassed area to the west of the existing fence line. This is a temporary construction fence that will later be replaced by a permanent fence.
