Description

Description
This workshop introduces attendees to the importance of seed collection for the conservation and propagation of native plant species in NYC. Led by staff from the NYC Parks Plant Ecology Center and Nursery, participants will learn about the importance of plant habitat to local ecosystems and how seed-based restoration promotes biodiversity. They will participate in a seed-collection walk through northern Central Park and learn about the common native plants of New York City. All materials will be provided, though attendees should be prepared to walk off-trail in Central Park, where there may be ticks and poison ivy. Bug spray, drinking water, and long pants are recommended.Register HereNYC Parks GreenThumb hosts this event. We are proud to be the nation’s most extensive urban community gardening program, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. With GreenThumb’s support, community gardens are centers of environmental justice, ensuring that our city is fairer, safer, and greener for all. GreenThumb’s events are free and open to the public.

Description
Take a docent led tour of the Conference House Museum also known as the Billiopp House located on Staten Island, New York and overlooking the Raritan Bay. This two-story grand fieldstone house was built by powerful landowner Royal Navy Captain Christopher Billopp About 1680. He wanted a home that would be an expression of his massive wealth, as well as a symbol of the stability of the colonies.  Nearly a century later the Billopp House had become a center of colonial hospitality. Billopp’s great-grandson, loyal to the crown, offered his ancestral family home as the site of a meeting of great importance. It is Named The Conference House because it is the site of the only Peace Conference of the American Revolution. Continental Congress representatives Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Edward Rutledge met here with British Admiral Lord Howe at his request on September 11,1776 in an unsuccessful effort to stop the American Revolution. The Americans had already written and signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4,1776 and their course would not be altered. Though the group discusses options for a peaceful cessation of hostilities, no agreement was reached and the fighting continued for seven years.Today the Conference House Museum presents an interpretation of an 18th century colonial manor to the general public. The building is owned by NYC Parks and operated by the Conference House Association as a historic house museum in partnership with the Historic Trust of NYC.

Description
Staten Island, New York City, and the nation’s history and architecture are alive and present within the built environment of Conference House Park. On OHNY Weekend, in addition to the park’s namesake, the circa-1680 Conference House (Christopher Billop House), two other historic house interiors will be open to visitors. This includes the NYC landmark-designated Henry Hogg-Biddle House (circa 1840) with its front and rear two-story portico and the William H. Rutan House (aka The Rutan-Becket House) with its intact 1950s era kitchen, not usually open to the public. The maritime past of Staten Island’s south shore is highlighted by these wonderful historic buildings.Access to the historic house interiors require stairs. Trails, pathways, and sidewalks connect houses and may be uneven.Conference House Park may be reached by the S78 bus to the corner of Hylan Boulevard and Craig Avenue, or the Tottenville SIR station. A parking lot and nearby street parking are available.Open House New York Weekend is an annual festival that unlocks hundreds of destinations across the five boroughs for behind-the-scenes tours and special activities.

Join the Open House New York 2026 Festival and explore the grounds of the Historic Brougham Cottage in Blue Heron Park!Located at 4746 Amboy Road, Staten Island, NY, and located within a wooded backdrop, the circa 1726 Brougham Cottage is a surviving Dutch H-frame home.Brougham Cottage survives as a rare example of the small vernacular farm houses that were once common in the 18th and early 19th century rural landscape and have all but disappeared. It is a significant example of Dutch-American design and a rare reminder of Staten Island’s rural history and its vernacular architectural traditions.

Description
Featuring work by: Erin Butler, Linda Butti, Mary Campbell, Lisa Dahl, Griselda Healy, Craig Manister, Ann Marie McDonnell, Mike Shane, Gayle Tanaka, Martha Trivizas. Celebrating Snug Harbor’s longstanding studio program, where artists in residence create new work within its historic buildings, PROXIMITY explores the studio as a generative space: artists working near one another across space, time, and relationship. Spanning painting, photography, and mixed media, PROXIMITY is not defined by a shared aesthetic, but by a condition of closeness. Here, proximity becomes more than a matter of place—it becomes a context through which individual practices develop, intersect, and inform one another.  When: October 2 - December 13Fridays & Saturdays, 12:00 PM-7:00 PM | Sundays, 11:00 AM- 5:00 PMWhere: Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, Main Hall Gallery, Building C  (View Site Map and Directions)Admission:$5.00 – General Admission$4.00 – Students/SeniorsPlease note: On October 16, we will host an opening reception for PROXIMITY from 6-8 PM. Visiting during those hours will be free. Please RSVP to the reception here: https://snug-harbor.org/event/proximity-opening-reception/ PROXIMITY is made possible through generous support from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the Samuel I.
