Description
Join Connor Youngerman of Cornell Small Farms and the Bronx River Foodway team for a deep dive into how to harvest from and winterize Air Pruned Raised Beds (APRBs). Following on the initial workshop this past April, this session will come full circle on how to implement APRBs as a propagation strategy. APRBs have been shown as an excellent method for growing a suite of urban tree species and hold great promise as a tool for forestry practitioners in NYC. Participants will have the opportunity to harvest and prepare saplings from the APRB, transplant them, and learn about overwintering the beds as a strategy.

It helps you honor and celebrate your memories, while easing the pain that comes with longing for a lost loved one. Plants can help so much in supporting and building the heart to be whole again, helping us find strength, courage and relief. Explore the oils associated with healing emotional pain and create your own perfume to take home.alchemologie.com

Description
The event will begin with a moving live performance by musician Juan Usera and The Sambuco Tribe, setting the tone and making space for remembrance and renewal. Following the music, Bronx-based artist Tijay Mohammed will lead an interactive chalk art project aptly named “Message to my Ancestors,” transforming the pathway into a vibrant canvas that honors history and sparks imagination for the future.Local artists will work alongside Tijay Mohammed, including Adrienne George, Musah Swallah, Noel Hefele, and Yoshiko Mori. This unique gathering blends art, music, and community in a powerful act of reimagining, bringing people together in a shared experience of creativity and remembrance.Tijay Mohammed's "Message to my Ancestors" project is sponsored by Bronx Council on the Arts and AnkhLave Arts Alliance, Inc.The event is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. This event is part of Van Cortlandt Park Alliance’s REIMAGINING initiative. VCPA invites the community to reimagine the park’s Enslaved African Burial Ground site as a memorial space that fosters long-term healing and restoration. Phase 1 of this project was supported by a generous grant from the Mellon Foundation. Juan Usera is a fourth-generation Bomba practitioner and culture-bearer from Santurce, Puerto Rico, a community educator, researcher, college professor, musician, and performer. He specializes in Puerto Rican and Caribbean music and culture and has over 20 years of experience developing highly engaging cultural activities and arts programs throughout the New York tri-state area. Juan is the founder and director of La Tribu del Juey Sambuco (La Tribu), an Afro-Caribbean music and dance ensemble and arts in education company. La Tribu has been featured at Lincoln Center and El Museo del Barrio among many others. He is the recipient of a NYSCA Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grant, City Parks Foundation grant, and NYFA City Artists Corps grant among others.Ghanaian-born artist Tijay Mohammed currently resides in Bronx, NY. As an artist he has a strong passion for exploring issues that affect community and humanity at large. His work explores the concept of 'excess' in the production and consumption of products, and offers a solution through the integration of materials reuse and up-cycling. Tijay has spearheaded workshops and community-oriented projects for esteemed organizations, including the Studio Museum Harlem, Brooklyn Museum, Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling, Children’s Museum of Manhattan, Wallach Art Gallery, Lehman College, University of Ghana, and Pinto Community Centre in Trinidad and Tobago.

Description
Featuring work by: Erin Butler, Linda Butti, Mary Campbell, Lisa Dahl, Griselda Healy, Craig Manister, Ann Marie McDonnell, Mike Shane, Gayle Tanaka, Martha Trivizas. Celebrating Snug Harbor’s longstanding studio program, where artists in residence create new work within its historic buildings, PROXIMITY explores the studio as a generative space: artists working near one another across space, time, and relationship. Spanning painting, photography, and mixed media, PROXIMITY is not defined by a shared aesthetic, but by a condition of closeness. Here, proximity becomes more than a matter of place—it becomes a context through which individual practices develop, intersect, and inform one another.  When: October 2 - December 13Fridays & Saturdays, 12:00 PM-7:00 PM | Sundays, 11:00 AM- 5:00 PMWhere: Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, Main Hall Gallery, Building C  (View Site Map and Directions)Admission:$5.00 – General Admission$4.00 – Students/SeniorsPlease note: On October 16, we will host an opening reception for PROXIMITY from 6-8 PM. Visiting during those hours will be free. Please RSVP to the reception here: https://snug-harbor.org/event/proximity-opening-reception/ PROXIMITY is made possible through generous support from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation.

Description
Join nature educator Ryan Mandelbaum and yoga/mindfulness instructor Susie Caramanica to explore how mindfulness can deepen our awareness, observation, and enjoyment of the natural world.  This guided experience combines mindfulness practices with birding, inviting participants to slow down, clear mental distractions, and become more fully attentive to the environment around them. Through simple grounding exercises, participants will cultivate a focused awareness that can help them notice more—from a bird's song to subtle movement in the canopy, participants can fully appreciate an encounter that might otherwise go unnoticed.   The program begins with gentle mindfulness practices designed to settle the mind and sharpen sensory awareness. Participants will then be guided through the landscape, learning to identify birds by sight and sound while observing behavior, habitat, migration, and seasonal activity. No prior experience with birding or mindfulness practice is necessary. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and bring water and binoculars if they have them. Registration encouraged; online or by calling 718.549.3200 x251; drop-ins based on availability. Questions? Please contact us at information@wavehill.org or by calling the number and extension provided above. Following this program, join us for Yoga in the Garden with instructor Susie Caramanica (additional fees apply).Additional Fall 2026 Birding programs:Sun, Nov 8: November BirdingWalks follow a route along mixed-material pathways with varying elevations. A limited amount of walking sticks are available to borrow. Pace varies from a slow walk to moderate walk throughout.

Description
Take a docent led tour of the Conference House Museum also known as the Billiopp House located on Staten Island, New York and overlooking the Raritan Bay. This two-story grand fieldstone house was built by powerful landowner Royal Navy Captain Christopher Billopp About 1680. He wanted a home that would be an expression of his massive wealth, as well as a symbol of the stability of the colonies.  Nearly a century later the Billopp House had become a center of colonial hospitality. Billopp’s great-grandson, loyal to the crown, offered his ancestral family home as the site of a meeting of great importance. It is Named The Conference House because it is the site of the only Peace Conference of the American Revolution. Continental Congress representatives Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Edward Rutledge met here with British Admiral Lord Howe at his request on September 11,1776 in an unsuccessful effort to stop the American Revolution. The Americans had already written and signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4,1776 and their course would not be altered. Though the group discusses options for a peaceful cessation of hostilities, no agreement was reached and the fighting continued for seven years.Today the Conference House Museum presents an interpretation of an 18th century colonial manor to the general public. The building is owned by NYC Parks and operated by the Conference House Association as a historic house museum in partnership with the Historic Trust of NYC.
